Lab-9-Accessing iSCSI Storage

ISCSI is a kind of the storage system having the LUNS .the Iscsi  initiator role is taken by  the ESXi   host.

In this lab, we are going to see  how to access an iSCSI datastore.

we are going to

1)Add a VMKernel port Group to a Standard Switch

2)Configure the iSCSI Software Adapter

vmkernal acts like an interface between the virtual macines and the hardwares of the system that is the network , vmkernal is runned on the bare metal  directly on the vmware esxi hosts.

this vmkernal enables in the allocation of the memory , scheduling the cpus and offering the hardware needs,Operating systems

The main intention of a  VMkernel port is to offer  some kind of   Layer 2 or Layer 3 services to the vSphere host.

now

Go to the Home then to Hosts and Clusters then to Data Center  then to lab Servers then to ESXi Host 1named  as host1.deepak.local Screenshot (1663)

select the Networking option in Manage categories here we are Selecting the  vSwitch1 from the list of the below shown  Virtual switches and click ‘Add host Networking’

Screenshot (1664)

click on add host networking option that is located at the corner , after a window is poped up  Select Connection Type as VMKernel Network Adapter

this handles the works related to iscsi , migration and various other functions

Screenshot (1666)

we have to give a name in the  Network Label in the port Properties option. , I have given it as  ‘VMKernel’ . Keep other settings default and click ‘Next’

Screenshot (1668)

here we have to give  VMkernel port IP and Subnet Mask and

then select ‘Finish’Screenshot (1669)

after the configuration has done click on finishScreenshot (1672)

then  the vm kernal added

now we are going to  configure iSCSI Software Adapter that has beeen made VMware EXSi.

It allows the ESXi host in creating  a connection for the purpose of communication with the physical NIC

Screenshot (1673)

now we have  to add storage adapter & Select the iSCSI adapter.

Go to the ‘Storage Adapter’  then select  ‘Add new Storage adapter’ then select ‘select software iSCSI adapter’ and then click on Add . finalise by clicking ok.

Now we ahve to confirm that   the iSCSI initiator name must be same  If it does not match with ESXi iSCSI , replace it

Now select the newly created iSCSI adapters,

select the properties tab & verify  whether the adapter status

conclusion :

by this we can access the IScsi storage this also helps in accessing the LUN’s that are being created on the  simulator storage

for these all actions to be done the lab we must have to enable the Iscsi service in the ontap manager of the storage
